Homeless in Stoke: Design and illustration of graphic novel as a way of communicating academic research. A team of researchers from the Universities of Salford and Lincoln spent two years investigating the life stories of people who are experiencing homelessness in Stoke-on-Trent. The stories the researchers heard lend themselves very well to a retelling for a wider audience; the graphic novel format was chosen to engage people in the complex issues that precede episodes of homelessness.

Early in the twenty-first century, homelessness remains a pressing social issue in the United Kingdom. Yet, the needs and experiences of people who are, or have been, homeless are often or ignored or misunderstood. This book depicts the real life stories of five people experiencing homelessness and describes, in their own words, the life events that preceded their homeless episodes and the challenges they face in moving forward with their lives.
A team of researchers from the Universities of Salford and Lincoln have spent two years investigating the life stories of people who are experiencing homelessness in Stoke-on-Trent. The project was part of a new programme of research, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, into multiple exclusion homelessness and will feed into future government policy and the practices of homelessness service providers. The stories the researchers heard lend themselves very well to a retelling for a wider audience; the graphic novel format was chosen to engage people in the complex issues that precede episodes of homelessness. Five diverse stories were chosen for illustration.
